Celebrate National Cubicle Day

Your Cube Is Your Castle

Happy Cubicle Day!

The momentous day has finally come — the first ever National Cubicle Day. Okay, so you may not have seen it on your local news or received a "Happy Cubicle Day" e-greeting this year. That's okay. Every holiday has to start somewhere. Do you think the first Groundhog's Day was the talk of the nation? If you think celebrating National Cubicle Day is weird, then imagine the the thought processes that came up with Groundhog's Day.

Anyway, National Cubicle Day was conceived as a kind of tongue-in-cheek celebration for those who slave away in cubicles. An excuse for a wild happy hour. A reason to pimp out your cube. After suffering all year long in cubicles with zero privacy, we deserve a day to call our own.

So round up your co-workers for a little cubicle celebration. Put it on film and enter
Monster.com's Cube Fabulous contest to win a cubicle makeover and other valuable prizes.

Help us start a groundswell of support for National Cubicle Day. Next year, look for an official Cubicle Day party coming to a bar near you. And if all of us cubicle-inmates band together, we just may get a national work holiday out of all this someday.

Pimp Your Cubicle, Part 1
What's the worst thing about working in a cubicle? Is it the dreary, caged ambience or the complete lack of privacy? Either way, don't despair. Smartmoney.com presents some cool accessories to liven up the decor and discourage cube invaders.

My personal favorites are the Babble Voice Privacy Machine, which can drown out the screeches of your neighbors for only $395, and the Lazer Trip Wire, which uses infrared beams to detect intruders.

The Cubicle -- The Early Years

In the beginning, there were no cubicles. It wasn't until 1968 that the cubicle was invented by Bob Propst of office furniture company Herman Miller.

Originally viewed as an improvement over the open office plan, Propst’s design was adapted in order to cram more employees into smaller spaces.

Probst came to regret his invention; “They make little bitty cubicles and stuff people in them. Barren, rat-hole places...”

Thanks, Bob.
